What’s the Difference Between CBD Tinctures and CBD Oils?
It’s common for those new to the world of CBD to wonder if tinctures and oils are terms used to describe the same CBD product. While the terms aren’t synonymous, it’s an easy mistake to make, especially because many producers used them interchangeably. As the CBD industry has matured, “oil” has become more generally used, whereas “tincture” evolved to represent a dropper-style bottle. However, the differences between CBD oils and tinctures don’t stop there.
Cannabidiol Oils
CBD offers the many therapeutic benefits of the cannabis plant without the psychoactive effects of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The lack of intoxication makes CBD ideal for capitalizing on the anti-inflammatory, chronic pain-reducing, anxiety-relieving properties of the Cannabis sativa plant. These benefits can be accessed with CBD oils and tinctures.
Where oils and tinctures begin to differ starts in their means of production and the additional compounds present in each. The average CBD oil blend contains CBD extract and an oil that works as a carrier for the desired compounds. The medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) coconut oil is a great example of an inert carrier oil. Which would be combined with CBD extract. Through a method called supercritical CO2, the oils are extracted from the cannabis plant and mixed with the carrier oil.
Cannabidiol Tinctures
To create a CBD tincture, a high-proof alcohol is used to extract the desired compounds from the cannabis plant. The same high-proof alcohol is commonly used in the finished product, as well. CBD tinctures often contain approximately 60–70% alcohol and possess a longer shelf life (3–5 years) of effectiveness.
The bitter taste exuded by alcohol-based liquids isn’t masked in alcohol-based CBD tinctures. Commonly, additives like sweeteners, vitamins, melatonin, supplements, or herbal extracts are used to improve the flavor or effectiveness of the product.
It’s important to know where your CBD products are sourced from, especially when using CBD tinctures, which can contain pesticides if sellers use unhealthy additives.
